Let's Talk Periods

It is important to understand the natural process of periods, and how to deal with it, naturally. Right infromation, and right practices goes long way towards a Healthy and Happy Womenhood.

What is normal?
Know your periods

Normal cycles can vary from 21 to 35 days. Bleeding or menses can last for 2 to 7 days normally. Average blood loss is around 80 ml for total periods/menses days. The Colour of the blood is dark red (or what is called Blood-red). Some clots are normal, not just some. Menstrual periods can be associated with pre-menstrual symptoms, like mild cramps, vomiting, mood disorders, mood swings, headache, etc. Occurrence and severity can vary from woman to woman, but nothing should be unbearable or in excess. Consult a gynecologist if you feel something is not right.

Keep "it" in a good health
Menstrual Hygiene

Most menstrual-related problems are consequences of unhygienic practices. Many women lack awareness and adequate information about menstruation. Frequent washing using just clean normal water is more than sufficient in most cases. During periods, use sanitary napkins or tampons, and change them frequently. Don’t shave or use hair removal cream on your genital area, and avoid chemical products.

Know your symtomps

It is important to be aware of your own health and keep on the lookout for symptoms related to gynaecological issues. Mild menstrual cramps, vaginal bleeding during periods and discharge are a normal part of your menstrual cycle before menopause. But, if you notice anything different or unusual, especially any bleeding, swelling, or itching in your reproductive organs, which you consider not-so-normal, always consult your gynaecologist immediately as soon as you notice. Don't try to treat the problem yourself.
  • Vaginal bleeding

Bleeding between periods is not normal. Some women do experience little spotting at the time of ovulation, but other than that it is not normal. It might be associated with fibroids, infection, uterine polyps, etc. Consult a gynecologist.
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge

Vaginal discharge with an unpleasant or unusual odor, or of an unusual color, or increased vaginal discharge is “NOT” considered normal. It might be a symptom of infection.
  • Urination discomfort

Frequent and urgent need to urinate, or a burning sensation during urination needs immediate attention.
  • Bleeding after menopause

Menopause usually occurs post 45-55 years of age for Indians. Any kind of bleeding after menopause is alarming, even the spotting. You must consult a gynecologist for further diagnosis.
  • Pain in pelvis

Pain or pressure in your pelvis that differs from menstrual cramps can be serious. The most common causes are pelvic infection, STD, urinary infection, etc. Untreated infection can lead to serious consequences, like infertility.
  • Other Symtomps to look for

itching, burning, swelling, redness, or soreness in the vaginal area, and/or sores or lumps in the genital area

Issues of women's health
Stigma, taboo, and misinformation

Gynecological issues are a common occurrence, and science has advanced to treat most of these in an affordable and effective manner, it is a lack of awareness related to women’s health that leads to complicated undesirable situations.
